LAKES AND WATERFALLS
To the north is Lake Vyrnwy (about 30 minutes), which has a picturesque Victorian dam, some shops, childrens playground and visitor centre.
There is a scenic drive around the lake, with picnic areas, forest trails, with some appropriate sculptures. Best of all though is the Lake Vyrnwy hotel, which does bar meals and has one of the best views in Wales from its terrace.
Slightly further north is the village of Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, and nearby is the Pistyll Rhaeadr waterfall, an extremely impressive 300 foot drop in a very scenic setting. There are toilets and a café available.
Further north is lake Bala with sailing and a steam railway.
WELSHPOOL AND THE EAST
About three miles away in Llangadfan is the lovely Badger Cafe and village store. Whether its a full Welsh breakfast, afternoon tea or for a newspaper and a loaf of bread, its just 5 minutes drive.
About 15 minutes (8 miles) to the east is Llanfair Caereinion, a small town with a nice old church and some good pubs. From here you can catch the Light Steam Railway to Welshpool or just use the café and buy railway souvenirs. The essential Spar shop is here, which is open on Sunday and sells as selection of wine and beers.
The market town of Welshpool, with Powys castle, canal boat rides, four supermarkets and numerous shops and cafes is about 30 minutes (17 miles).
WEST COAST SEASIDE
Heading west you can reach the coast at Fairbourne or Barmouth in around 45 minutes unless there is a lot of traffic.
Fairbourne is the quieter of the two, with a long flat clean sandy beach, backed by shingle. There are a few shops and a miniature steam railway which runs at the back of the beach, at the end of which is a café from where you can catch a small ferry boat to Barmouth.
Barmouth is a more lively resort, with many cafes, a small harbour and children’s entertainments. From here a long sandy beach begins, which runs north as far as Talybont, Duffryn and Harlech
